Digital Media – Course Information

1. Overview

This course produces graduates to satisfy the demand for creative designers in the exciting field of digital media production.

The curriculum enables you to develop a skill set which spans both design and computing. Subjects include: motion graphics; interaction; interface and web site design; 3D computer modelling and animation; visual effects; audio/video post production; DVD authoring and computer/mobile games content design.

Year 1

You will be introduced to the visual and technical skills that are required by digital media designers
The basics of design methods, creative/critical thinking will also be presented

Year 2

The first semester will involve exploring and applying principles of interface and website design
During the second semester you will progress towards 3D computer modelling and animation

Year 3

Semester one will see the introduction of key principles of audio/video post-production and visual effects
During semester two you will have the opportunity to do an industrial placement or study overseas as part of a European exchange programme. Alternatively you can choose to collaborate on a studio-based, self-directed project with one of our industry partners, where you will study the requirements of new business start-ups

Year 4

The honours year is more self-directed. You will select your specific area of interest with the aim being to produce a body of work of a professional standard

Entry requirements

SQA Higher – CCC, normally including English and Art/Design or an equivalent subject

GCE A Level – CD, normally including Art/Design or equivalent

ILC Higher – CCC, normally including English and Art/Design or equivalent

IB Diploma – 24, including English and Visual Arts at Higher level or equivalent

Alternative Qualifications

HNC or Access to Higher Education Programmes or equivalent qualifications may also be considered. Applications from those who have work experience that replaces formal qualifications are welcomed.

For international students, equivalent qualifications are required as well as proof of proficiency in English.

Advanced Entry (Year 2 +)

Entry into second year or later would be subject to interview and a presentation of a portfolio of work. Qualifications to accompany this may include an HND, Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art, or another equivalent qualification.

All suitable applicants will be invited to attend an informal meeting with academic staff where they will present a portfolio of their work. This presents an invaluable opportunity for applicants to meet staff and learn more about the teaching environment.
