This course will introduce you to the different aspects of the graphic design discipline through a range of experiences and projects, often with external industry partners.
Subjects include: Print Design; Typography; Brand & Corporate Identity; Advertising and Motion Graphics.
Year 1
Introduces you to the basic intellectual, visual and technical skills required by all graphic designers
You will also acquire and apply basic knowledge of design methods, creative/critical thinking, and presentation and communication skills
Year 2
You will continue to develop and apply previously gained knowledge of design methods
The curriculum follows a series of themes that define broader aspects of the graphic design discipline
Projects concentrate on responding to the requirements of industry partners
Year 3
In Semester 1 you will continue working with industry partners and practicing designers on live projects
In Semester 2 you can opt to undertake an industrial placement or study overseas as part of our European exchange programme
Alternatively you can collaborate on a studio based self-directed project with one of our industry partners and study the specific requirements of new business start-up
Year 4
n the self directed Honours year you will select your preferred area of interest and aim to produce a body of resolved design work at a level appropriate to the threshold of professional practice
SQA Higher – CCC, normally including English and Art/Design or an equivalent subject
GCE A Level – CD, normally including Art/Design or equivalent
ILC Higher – CCC, normally including English and Art/Design or equivalent
IB Diploma – 24, including English and Visual Arts at Higher level or equivalent
Alternative Qualifications
HNC or Access to Higher Education Programmes or equivalent qualifications may also be considered. Applications from those who have work experience that replaces formal qualifications are welcomed.
For international students, equivalent qualifications are required as well as proof of proficiency in English.
Advanced Entry (Year 2 +)
Entry into second year or later would be subject to interview and a presentation of a portfolio of work. Qualifications to accompany this may include an HND, Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art, or another equivalent qualification.
All suitable applicants will be invited to attend an informal meeting with academic staff where they will present a portfolio of their work. This presents an invaluable opportunity for applicants to meet staff and learn more about the teaching environment.
In semester 2 of year 3, students are given the opportunity to take part in an industrial placement.
Students are eligible for student membership of the Chartered Society of Designers.
